A unified approach to subdivision algorithms near extraordinary vertices

چکیده
We present a unified approach to subdivision algorithms for meshes with arbitrary topology which admits a rigorous analysis of the generated surface and give a sufficient condition for the regularity of the surface, i.e. for the existence of a regular smooth parametrization near the extraordinary point. The criterion is easily applicable to all known algorithms such as those of Doo-Sabin and Catmull-Clark, but will also be useful to construct new algorithms like interpola-tory subdivision schemes.

Smoothness of Stationary Subdivision on Irregular Meshes
We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for tangent plane and C-continuity of stationary subdivision schemes near extraordinary vertices. Our criteria generalize most previously known conditions. We introduce a new approach to analysis of subdivision surfaces based on the idea of the universal surface. Any subdivision surface can be locally represented as a projection of the universal sur...
متن کاملTuning Subdivision by Minimising Gaussian Curvature Variation Near Extraordinary Vertices
We present a method for tuning primal stationary subdivision schemes to give the best possible behaviour near extraordinary vertices with respect to curvature variation. Current schemes lead to a limit surface around extraordinary vertices for which the Gaussian curvature diverges, as demonstrated by Karčiauskas et al. [KPR04]. Even when coefficients are chosen such that the subsubdominant eige...
متن کاملREVERSE LOOP SUBDIVISION FOR GEOMETRY AND TEXTURES
Reverse subdivision aims at constructing a coarser representation of an object given by a fine polygon mesh. In this paper, we first derive a mask for reverse Loop subdivision that can be applied to both regular and extraordinary vertices. The mask is parameterized, and thus can also be used in reversing variants of Loop subdivision, such as those proposed by Warren and Litke. We apply this mas...
متن کاملSurface Subdivision Algorithms and Structured Linear Algebra: a Computational Approach to Determine Bounds of Extraordinary Rule Weights
Abstract. In the vicinity of extraordinary vertices, the action of a primal subdivision scheme for the construction of arbitrary topology surfaces can be represented by structured matrices that form a hybrid matrix algebra related to the block-circulant algebra. Exploiting the block diagonalization of such matrices, we can easily take into consideration the constraints to be satisfied by their ...
متن کاملPiecewise smooth subdivision surfaces with normal control
In this paper we introduce improved rules for Catmull-Clark and Loop subdivision that overcome several problems with the original schemes (lack of smoothness at extraordinary boundary vertices, folds near concave corners). In addition, our approach to rule modification allows generation of surfaces with prescribed normals, both on the boundary and in the interior, which considerably improves co...
